Mixing one’s alcohol, consuming too many sugary cocktails, and even so much the color of the liquor makes a difference in one's hangover. But what happens when we drink beer first and end with liquor? We've all heard the saying: beer before liquor, never been sicker. Liquor before beer, in the clear. Is this a tip we can carelessly rely on to have a few too many, or is it just a long-time myth that needs to retire?
Myth or Fact
While experts are not entirely confident in where the claim first came to be, they believe that it could have possibly stemmed from how we digest certain alcoholic beverages. Because carbonated drinks such as beer and sparkling wines/ciders are known to irritate and cause inflammation in the stomach lining, it increases the rate at which we absorb alcohol. In this case, those who drink beer first and then switch to liquor will most likely end up drinking more, resulting in a higher level of intoxication. On the contrary, those who drink liquor before beer typically don’t drink beer after. There isn't a significant amount of evidence against the claim that carbonation causes an increase in intoxication, though. Beer also has the lowest ABV (Alcohol by Volume) but a higher volume than a shot of liquor, raising the BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) more slowly. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism guidelines follow:
So, Why Are My Hangovers so Bad?
Although drinking beer irritates the lining of the stomach and liquor has a higher alcohol level, the truth is that it doesn’t matter what type of alcohol we drink. Alcohol is alcohol. “In reality, that has little effect,” said Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa, a gastroenterologist at the New York University School of Medicine. He told the New York Times, “What matters most, she said, is the amount of alcohol consumed and whether it’s combined with any food, which slows absorption and minimizes sickness.” Regardless of the type of alcohol, it still digests the same through our liver and takes an hour to digest one drink. If you start to feel sick drinking liquor, try drinking beer or a similar alternative that has lower alcohol volume than liquor does. It will slow your body down and keep you from getting intoxicated as quickly.
How Can I Keep From Getting Hungover?
Although there's not much evidence supporting the ‘beer first, liquor second’ theory, the type of alcohol we drink or the capacity does not matter. Anyone can consume beer, wine, or liquor, but the truth is that alcohol is still a toxin that will make us sick, and there are only a few ways to fight off the flu-like symptoms. Eating nourishing meals that include protein and healthy carbs packed with vitamins and minerals will highly benefit the morning after a night out drinking. Also, drinking lots of water is crucial for anyone planning an alcohol-filled night. Drinking water before, during, and after the consumption of alcohol will drastically influence the severity of a hangover. While beer before liquor might work for some, it's not a foolproof system. If in doubt, spread the drinking out, slow down if needed, and listen to your body.
There are few things greater than cracking open an ice-cold beer after a long day. For most, drinking a beer or two is enough to make you feel as though you're carrying a beer baby. On the other hand, at least the bloat as an effect of the alcohol makes it easy to cut off after a few drinks. It turns out that beverages like beer and soda water contain carbon dioxide gas that releases into our bodies as we consume it. If so, is this to blame for the bloating we experience?
Inflammation from Alcohol
When we drink alcohol, it can easily irritate the stomach lining (better known as Gastritis). Together, it causes inflammation, then leading to feeling bloated. It can cause an excess of gas in the body, burping, and mild discomfort such as cramps. Nutritionist Bhuvan Rastogi states, "Alcohol is inflammatory in large quantities and this is aggravated even more because it's usually coupled with an increase in foods which cause gas, like sugar and carbonated drinks."
The Beer Belly is Real
As Rastogi claims, bloating isn't the only thing we need to worry about when drinking. Most of us are familiar with the associated weight gain of alcohol after having one too many and finding ourselves elbow-deep in whatever snack we can find. All alcohol, no matter the type, can be calorie-heavy, and those calories add up quickly. They typically range from 70 calories for a shot of liquor and can add up to several hundred calories for those who enjoy their fancy (often sugar-packed) cocktails. When looking at beer, wine, and hard liquor altogether, beer has the most calories out of the three, making it easier to gain weight.
Dehydration and Bloating Don't Mix
We have all been told that avoiding a hangover means drinking water before, during, and after drinking alcohol. Bloating is a topic that is hardly talked about, as too often, our dreadful hangover symptoms are the only thing that we can process as we come to in the morning. Not drinking enough water can cause an increase in the production of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), causing us to retain water and bloat. Retaining water also causes swelling, typically in the hands, feet, and face. To avoid bloating and swelling, maintaining adequate hydration is a must. Drinking at least eight glasses of water each day is optimal, but be sure to factor in any alcoholic beverages you plan to consume, drinking water throughout the duration.
So, Does Beer Really Cause Bloating?
Beer is, unfortunately, one of the worst options for trying to avoid bloating. As delicious as it is, the carbonation from carbon dioxide levels is bound to make anyone feel like they just ate a three-course dinner after a couple of drinks. Those looking to enjoy a cold one while limiting bloat can look at these charts to see what beer types have lower carbon dioxide levels. For those looking to avoid bloating and lose weight, it might be best to avoid beer altogether. Calories from a beer can add up quickly (even with the lighter options), and aside from the bloating, it will cause weight gain. As far as dehydration and beer, it doesn't make a difference in what type of alcohol it is. When we drink alcohol, we become dehydrated, retaining water, making us bloat and look puffy.
As much as we want to avoid the beer bloat, most will not stop drinking beer altogether, but there are some actions we can take to decrease it. Depending on the quantity and how often one drinks, limiting the alcohol intake may minimize bloat if not get rid of it altogether. Also, consuming enough water daily and even more when we drink will decrease both bloating and retention by maintaining hydration in the body. Try to avoid sparkling water, though, or any other carbonated beverages, as it contains carbon dioxide and will cause an increase in bloating that we're trying to avoid. Try not to swallow too much air as it can cause painful gas, bloating, and abdominal pain. The University of Michigan Health suggests chewing foods slowly and thoroughly and not drinking through a straw. Following these tips will help us reduce bloating, not only when we crack open a cold one, but throughout the day overall.
Red wine, made from fermented grapes, is packed with antioxidants, making them great for building up the immune system. Unfortunately, grapes (and other fruits that we love so much) are usually loaded with sugar and are often high in calories, making us rethink our portion sizes.
Nutrition Facts
A 5-ounce (148-mL) serving of red wine contains:
It’s important to note that not all wine types are the same. They typically vary in both sugar and calorie content and are partially responsible for making certain wines such as red better for us than others.
Immunity and Digestion
Red wine contains probiotic compounds that create and boost healthy gut bacteria in the body. As a result, wine can improve digestion for those with stomach irritation. Although it contains some vitamins and minerals, red wine still contains some of these nutrients. One glass of wine provides the body with 0.2 mg or 10% of manganese and small amounts of iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. From the skin of grapes, red wine is rich in resveratrol, which acts as an antioxidant, protecting against pathogens, like bacteria and fungi, and preventing blood clots. Resveratrol and other antioxidants also help with blood sugar control, inflammation, and heart health. Ultimately, drinking alcohol in moderation (no more than one drink a day for women and no more than two drinks a day for men) offers protection against heart disease.
Alcohol and Blood Sugar
Drinking in moderation can not only help prevent heart disease, but it can lower blood sugar as well. A study found that moderate consumption of alcohol improved glycemic status and reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes. While there has not been significant testing on this theory, results so far have concluded that there is somewhat of a correlation between alcohol intake and diabetes. Managing blood sugar levels helps aid in weight loss, as many individuals living with type 2 diabetes tend to be overweight.
With the many health benefits that red wine offers, it’s easy to see why many may over-consume this alcoholic beverage. However, keep in mind that caloric intake can still increase with red wine, especially if one excessively drinks. Beer and mixed drinks can be loaded with carbs and sugar, but most reds allow us to enjoy ourselves within limits while reaping the long list of benefits.
In the health and wellness industry, March is when we celebrate National Nutrition Month, focusing on healthy food choices alongside physical activity. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics discusses several topics, including diversifying flavors, switching up meal planning, and establishing food guidelines. A major aspect of getting the necessary nutrients is ensuring that we are well-hydrated. In honor of National Nutrition Month, here are some facts to encourage healthy and happy hydrating.
Hydration Trumps Food in Survival
Not only is it crucial that we maintain good levels of hydration, but also our lives depend on it. We can live without food for up to three weeks, using the fat and muscle on our bodies to burn for energy before the effects of starvation take over and kill us. With water, we can only survive three to four days from a lack of hydration. Typically, we lose at least between 0.3 and 1 liter of water every 24 hours from sweat and respiration. Factors that may cause a higher loss of water include environmental conditions, a person's overall (physical) health, and humidity levels.
We Can Get Our Hydration from Fruits and Vegetables
Realistically, not everyone follows the same diet. Some choose to eat more fresh produce throughout their day than others, but it turns out it’s benefiting more than just our diet. Eating enough fruits and vegetables throughout the day can source the body with 20% of its daily recommended intake for hydration. Check out this article that lists high-water-content fruits and vegetables, making them optimal for daily hydration and nutrition.
Drinking Water Increases Metabolism
When it comes to boosting our goals for weight loss, increasing the metabolism by drinking water is the best method. An increase in water intake is associated with weight loss, which occurs because of two mechanisms: decreased feeding and increased lipolysis (the process of breakdown of fats). Chugging 16 ounces of water at a time can raise the metabolism by 24-30% for approximately 90 minutes. Doing this multiple times throughout the day will boost the metabolism and ensure that the body is more than hydrated throughout the day.
Hydration Levels Impact Exercise
Preparation, duration, and recovery from an intense workout all take practice, but it greatly relies on the rehydration our body receives to perform properly. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends drinking 16 to 20 ounces of water one to two hours before exercise or outdoor activity. For more strenuous workouts or those who live in warmer climates, maintain water intake by drinking approximately every 15 minutes. Also, be sure to replace lost electrolytes, especially if more strenuous exercises are planned.
Hydrate for Healthy Skin
Drinking enough water each day is essential for all of our organs and especially for our body's largest organ: our skin. There are a million ways to take care of our skin with products such as cleansers, exfoliators, creams, and sunscreen. Kathleen C. Suozzi, MD, director of aesthetic dermatology at Yale Medicine and assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, talks about healthy skin and the right way to achieve that. Our skin hydrates from the inside out by pulling fluid from the capillary blood to the skin, Suozzi explains. If we're dehydrated and there isn’t enough water to pull from, our skin can effectively dry out. All in all, consuming enough water along with a nutritious diet also means giving our skin a healthy glow.

]]>Drinking cocktails in the morning are often given a bad reputation, portrayed as an “I’m still drunk, so I might as well stay drunk” situation. Although morning drinks are used as the hair of the dog to lessen the regretful hangovers, there are great reasons to drink in the morning. For instance, Sunday brunch or just having fun with day drinking and bar hopping. Maybe the taste of a perfectly-made spicy bloody mary or a mimosa with your brunch every Sunday is the reason for day drinking. Whatever it may be, these five adult-friendly beverages are judgment-free before noon.
Bloody Mary
Bloody Marys are a classic drink, proving that they never go out of style. Just having had its 100th birthday last year where this drink was invented at Harry’s Bar in Paris, the bar serves over 12,000 bloody marys each year. In 1921, Creator and Bartender Fernand Petiot simply mixed tomato juice, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and vodka. Many consume bloody marys as a way to combat hangovers, maintaining the buzz with the alcohol in the drink. However, once one starts to sober up, the symptoms of a hangover hit hard. Luckily, the tomato-based cocktail comes with electrolytes, water, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B6, easing the hangover.
Mimosa
Another famous morning-approved alcoholic beverage is mimosas. While many recipes use champagne and orange juice, true mimosas use sparkling wine. The best sparkling wine is a bottle of Prosecco from Italy or Cava from Spain. The first mimosa was invented by Frank Meier in 1925 while working as a bartender at the Ritz Hotel bar in Paris. The mimosa started trending in Europe by the British royal family as a pre-dinner drink. It didn’t catch on in the United States until the mid-1960s when celebrities like Alfred Hitchcock, Vanessa Redgrave, and Denise Darcel were seen sipping on the “champagne-orange” (its native name). After being served in New York nightclubs, the champagne-orange took off in New Jersey as a day drink. By 1971, mimosas were being served alongside bloody marys, steak, and eggs at the Sunday “champagne” brunch.
Irish Coffee
If you’ve ever heard the term “make it Irish,” then you probably already know about Irish coffee. Joe Sheridan, a chef from Ireland, created Irish coffee in the winter of 1943. Because Ireland was one of the biggest, busiest civilian airports in Europe during World War ll, passengers from all over the world were often stuck overnight due to bad weather. Sheridan wanted to give his customers a drink to warm up with, and this legendary exchange took place: "Hey Buddy," said a surprised American passenger, "Is this Brazilian coffee?" "No," said Joe, "That's Irish Coffee." One question followed by a four-letter answer became a huge success, bringing those from around the world to learn from Sheridan himself on how to make the famous drink, including a bartender from a San Francisco hotel. Find the original recipe here.
Tequila Sunrise
Made famous after kicking off the American tour of the Rolling Stones party in 1972 and a song by the Eagles a year later, the tequila sunrise was born for success. It was first created by Gene Sulit in the 1930s at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel by combining tequila, soda water, lime juice, and liqueur. As the years went by, the drink made its way over to Sausalito, California, where bartenders at The Trident hotel remade the beverage. But this time by displaying its colorful layers with just tequila, orange juice, and grenadine. With its bright colors and tropical flavors, this cocktail will have many dreaming of a tropical vacation.
Bellini
Feeling like a fancy cocktail, but not ready for the hard liquor? A bellini is the perfect drink. The bellini was first created in 1948 by Giuseppe Cipriani, founder, and barman of the legendary Harry’s Bar in Venezia. Much of the menu, including fragrant white peaches and world-famous sparkling wine, was produced from the countryside. With the help of Cipriani’s international customers, word quickly spread in New York, Paris, and beyond about the newfound creation. Made with two parts prosecco and one part peach puree, the bellini is a sunset in a glass with a refreshing vibe.

]]>Dehydration is one of those things that even those with the cleanest bill of health experience from time to time. In our world, there are a handful of factors that can sneak up and dehydrate us seemingly, without warning. Immune systems weaken, causing sickness, and fatigue occurs from being rundown. Other times, we make choices (such as drinking alcohol), knowing that it will ultimately result in dehydration. For the longest time, we were convinced that water was sufficient enough in hydrating us, and that was that. Not all were that easily convinced, though, and being motivated to cure dehydration, created products, like Pedialyte, to help those unable to rehydrate by themselves. While the company's value is more than $160 million, there's more than meets the eye when it comes to its formula. The brand is seemingly effective, but at what cost?
The process of rehydrating the body is often mistaken as solely drinking enough water throughout the day. Part of being hydrated includes the maintenance of electrolytes to help regulate chemical reactions and the maintenance of appropriate fluid levels in the body. The main minerals found in electrolytes—sodium, potassium, and magnesium chloride—can be lost due to illness, hangovers, etc.
Pedialyte
Pedialyte, an oral rehydration product, has been one of the most popular brands for the past few decades, having been used by all ages from infants to older adults. Initially, it was created to treat an electrolyte imbalance caused by dehydration from those who became ill. Over the years, it transformed from rehydrating sick children to becoming the go-to post-alcohol hangover cure (caused by dehydration).
Pros
There's a reason that Pedialyte has continued to be successful for the last few decades: they create products that hydrate, replenish lost electrolytes, and even claim to work quickly. Their formula is a better choice (than some of the other competitor companies) with lower sugar levels. While low sugar is a good thing, a small amount of sugar is best for maximum electrolyte replenishment.
Cons
Although it's a go-to for many, Pedialyte has its share of flaws, too. One big red flag when looking at the ingredient list is that it contains sucralose and acesulfame potassium. These ingredients artificially sweeten many products, such as diet soda, to enhance the sweetness. Although artificial sweeteners are said not to cause certain cancers, they can do extreme damage to the brain, impacting one's memory, mood, and behavior. Dr. Janet Starr Hull, who studies the effects of artificial sweeteners, states sucralose is a toxic chemical called chlorocarbon. It's as if ingesting tiny amounts of chlorinated pesticides. Chlorocarbons are known for causing organ, genetic, and reproductive damage.
Reactions after sucralose consumption:
If this isn't bad enough, the FD&C Dyes are found in the rehydration drink and can also be harmful to the body. Red no. 40, Blue no. 1, and Yellow no. 6 are just a few listed in some of the products. These dyes have been linked to causing cancers, mental health disorders such as anxiety, and the inability to concentrate. Nausea and headaches are also common effects.
Pedialyte may be the choice for many, but there are alternative products on the market without negative side effects and reactions after consumption. For instance, DrinkLyte is serious about its commitment to one’s health and wellness lifestyle. Whether partying a little too hard the night before or desperately needing that extra hydration kick, DrinkLyte efficiently rehydrates and replenishes any lost electrolytes. Its formula follows that of the World Health Organization (WHO), ensuring that rehydration starts immediately with all-natural ingredients, letting everyone do more tomorrow.

For many, the thought of drinking enough water each day can be intimidating, as many fail to consume their recommended amount. One of the most common reasons for individuals not drinking enough water each day is the lack of thirst. During the warmer months, we're more aware of our hydration needs. Dehydration during the winter is much less noticeable, forcing us to be more mindful of the body. Like any other season, diet and lifestyle adjusts to what the body needs during the winter. A majority of those needs, are based on temperature regulation and the immune system. One of the best ways to stay hydrated and keep the immune system functioning is to load up on foods with high water content.
Bananas
Bananas aren't just good for cramps. When dehydration occurs, electrolytes. Bananas containing 74% water, high potassium, and magnesium help replenish lost electrolytes. Not only are they great as a post-workout snack, but also they aid in muscle recovery, reduce inflammation, and help replenish muscle glycogen.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are fruits that don’t get nearly as much recognition as they should for its benefits. With 94% water, this fruit is an excellent choice for hydration and a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. Lycopene is a plant nutrient that lowers the risk of developing heart disease and protects the skin against sunburns and certain types of cancers. This nutrient can also increase procollagen, which can potentially reverse sun damage.
Grapefruit
Another lycopene-containing fruit is grapefruit. An entire grapefruit holds 91% water and 4 grams of fiber. In addition, this food provides 120% of the daily recommended Vitamin C levels and supports brain function. This water-rich fruit is not only hydrating, but also contains the three main electrolyte minerals (magnesium, potassium, and a small amount of sodium).
Oranges
If grapefruits aren’t a favorite, oranges are another great option at 87% water. The Florida fruit contains Vitamin C and antioxidants that enhance immune function and heart health, making it the perfect source for building up the immune system. To get the fiber benefits for the day, be sure to eat the fruit and not just drink the juice, as the fibers in oranges are found in the membranes that enclose the slices of oranges.
Spinach
Anyone who has cooked spinach has seen it transform from a packed pan to almost nothing within minutes. Spinach is 92% water, therefore once the water evaporates, it leaves the healthy greens in their withered form. Low in calories, spinach is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and cancer prevention. It also contains plant compounds, potentially increasing heart health, eye health, and fighting off infection and inflammation.
Cauliflower
A surprisingly high water-content food, cauliflower contains 92% water. It is also a substantial source of fiber and contains 15 vitamins and minerals, including magnesium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and choline. Choline is less well-known because it's not found in many foods, and many individuals are deficient in this water-soluble compound. This compound is an essential nutrient for supporting brain health, muscle movement, liver function, and metabolism.
Strawberries
The highest water content of all the berries is strawberries. They are 92% water and have a substantial amount of vitamin C (150% DV/cup), fiber, and disease-fighting antioxidants. They can also lower blood pressure levels and cholesterol and support healthy brain function. Consuming strawberries regularly has been shown to reduce inflammation, a benefit to fighting against heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and various types of cancer.
Although these foods are significant sources of water, actually consuming water is the best way for hydration. Many people dislike the taste of water, but luckily, there is a never-ending list of alternatives to water, such as tea or sparkling water. Another way to consume water is to combine your favorite fruits and veggies and add them to your water. It’s important to remember that results don't change overnight. Rehydrating and adapting the body to a new routine takes time and patience. Keep a consistent schedule. Consume an adequate amount for hydration. Soon, the results will show improvement in both mental and physical health.

]]>At one point or another, we all wonder, "How much water should we be drinking?" It’s no secret that water has the best benefits for us. It gives us energy, helps aid in digestion, and even gives us healthy, glowing skin. Those who drink an adequate amount of water are three times as happy as those who don't drink enough water. While any time of day is a great time to get some fluids in, there are certain times throughout the day when water benefits the body the most.
Because our body is made up of 60% water, we have to consume enough water to keep a healthy function. Otherwise, dehydration can become uncomfortable and possibly turn serious if unintentional. Not drinking enough water can cause the following symptoms:
Despite being told that drinking 8 glasses of water a day was the recommended amount for everyone, this is just a myth. Recommended water intake is determined based on factors including sex, weight, physical abilities, and geographical location. The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an appropriate amount of daily water consumption is about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) for men and about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) for women.
When Should I Drink Water?
Morning
There’s nothing better than waking up first thing in the morning and drinking a tall glass of water. After not drinking while sleeping for 6-8 hours, our body gives us the gentle reminder to nourish ourselves with water before we become dehydrated. Drinking water in the morning aids in digestion while removing all the built-up toxins. Water also kickstarts our metabolism, helping us feel fuller and burn more calories throughout the day. Those who dread getting up in the morning and end up dragging themselves out of bed will find that water is the perfect solution. Not only does it help with fatigue by rehydrating the body, but also it lowers anxiety levels. As a result, water prepares us to take on any day with a healthy mindset.
Before Eating
Just as drinking water gets metabolism moving first thing in the morning, it also acts as a craving blocker and helps prevent overeating. Often, we feel we're hungry when we are most likely dehydrated, but we need to supply our bodies with healthy fluids instead. A study showed that drinking 16.9 ounces of water before eating breakfast resulted in a 13% decrease in calories consumed.
Before AND After Workouts
There’s no denying that fueling our workouts with water is hands-down the most important thing we can do. Consuming sufficient amounts of water is vital for workouts. Good nutrition and sleep are the next best things to fuel the body. With most physical activity, we lose fluids through sweat, therefore needing to replace them and any lost electrolytes. Without replacing fluids and electrolytes, our body cannot function. So, be sure to stock up on water, and if needed, an electrolyte replenisher (like DrinkLyte!) for the next sweat sesh planned.
Afternoon
Nobody likes that 2 pm slump. Whether it’s the sugar crash from the cake at an office party or the after-lunch slump that has you tempted to take a nap at your desk, sitting down at a desk all day is real and dangerous. Instead of going for coffee, drink some water instead. Water will process the sugar throughout the body by flushing the toxins out and will help with the fatigue.
Bedtime
When drinking water before bedtime, many don’t like to overdo it, because then they are going back and forth to the bathroom all night. If this sounds familiar, try having a few sips of water here and there as bedtime creeps closer. You might experience extreme thirst at night because you aren't hydrating enough during the day. If drinking most of your daily consumption occurs before getting into bed, it’s a sign to spread out the recommended daily water intake. If this proves to be difficult, try setting reminders throughout the day. A time marker water bottle, like this one, is also a great option because this bottle tracks both the time of day and the water intake.
Every January, we dust off our gym shoes, meal-prep for hours, and dispose of all the alcohol in the house (at least for the first thirty-one days of the new year). Dry January has become one of the most well-known resolutions to take effect for the first month of every year, first starting in 2013 in the UK. Since then, more than 130,000 individuals have participated in Dry January in 2021.
The Health Aspect of Dry January
For some, refraining from alcohol for a month may not seem like a big deal, but it’s a commitment to mental, physical, and emotional health. Giving up alcohol for a month may not be the easiest thing to do, but it does have its benefits. BMJ Open conducted a study on regular drinkers who abstained from alcohol for thirty days. The study showed that these drinkers’ energy, sleep, and weight loss improved and blood pressure and cholesterol levels decreased.
What is Damp January?
Thirty days of no alcohol is reasonably doable for some, but for others, it’s easier said than done. Rather than cutting off cold turkey, many are taking the (slightly less) deeper plunge into Damp January. Rather than giving up the full thirty-one days completely, individuals are only decreasing the number of alcoholic drinks that they consume. Some might wonder what the point of Damp January is, but the answer is different for everyone.
For those who only have one glass of wine or a cocktail on the weekends, doing Damp January may feel useless to them. On the other hand, for those who like to binge on alcohol, this could be a positive multi-step approach to lowering consumption levels without entirely giving them up. Giving up even one or two drinks each week is a step in the right direction.
But what happens after the 31 days? The downside to Dry January is that some participants may drink more than they did before.
Cutting off Cold Turkey
While completely cutting off alcohol might be safe for casual drinkers, it can be dangerous for those that binge drink. Similar to detoxing from drugs, a complete cutoff from alcohol is a shock to the system and can potentially cause mild withdrawal symptoms, such as headaches, nausea, anxiety, sweating, and insomnia. If symptoms worsen, it might be necessary to get help from a medical professional as withdrawals can be dangerous. Drinking habits vary from person to person, therefore those who drink alcohol more frequently should slowly wean themselves off of drinking if that's the decision they choose to make.
Implementing Healthy Habits
Dry (or Damp) January, while a fun challenge to do with friends and coworkers, is really about taking awareness of our health and wanting to make a positive change. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't enjoy a few drinks now and then, but we can implement healthier drinking habits, such as capping off after one drink or not keeping alcohol in the house. There is also a Try Dry app that tracks one's drinking and helps set personal goals based on the amount of alcohol that’s being cut back. It even shows the number of calories and money that we save just by giving up drinking.
It's okay to admit that we need that (over-poured) glass of wine after a long day of work or that girls' night out ended up being two or three cocktails instead of one. Instead of not allowing ourselves to have a drink, go enjoy every sip down to the last drop. Everything in life is about moderation and participating in Damp January might just be better for our health without the feeling of restriction and guilt if we have a slip-up. If Dry January is too much to handle, Damp January might just be the next best thing.

]]>We, as a population, are over-consumed by our own day-to-day lives. We’re all guilty of it. Whether we’re buried with office work or have our heads drowning in technology, we often ignore doing the essentials like nourishing our bodies with food and water. When it comes to dehydration, by the time we even notice we’re thirsty, it’s already too late. Instances like right before bed occur when we feel the sudden urge to drink a big glass (or two) of water. Others will feel unexpected moments of thirst throughout the day. Reasons for dehydration could be a dry climate or even a health concern, and these signal that our body is trying to communicate with us. In this article, we'll dig deeper into the potential causes of and solutions to our sudden thirst.
What Does it Mean to be Dehydrated?
Dehydration is caused by the loss of too much fluid from the body. The body has a certain amount of fluids, and if not enough fluids are replaced as the body expels them, dehydration can occur. The same goes for electrolytes. We need a certain amount of electrolytes for our body to function properly, but like fluids, electrolytes are expelled through urine, sweat, and breath. Therefore, electrolytes also need to be replaced as they leave the body. An osmolality test can be performed to check the fluid levels and electrolyte balance. Osmolality levels increase when one is dehydrated and decrease when there is excess fluid in the blood. When there’s an increase, the body will send signals to the kidneys to make an antidiuretic hormone (ADH).
Symptoms of Dehydration:
Many believe that being dehydrated is about feeling thirst arise and that it’s not a big deal if they don’t rehydrate right away. One of the most common symptoms of dehydration is thirst, so once we hit that point, we are already dehydrated and should replace lost fluids right away. Not replacing lost fluids can result in serious complications such as low blood pressure, stroke, seizures, and even kidney disease. Unfortunately, circumstances out of our control, like no access to water or fighting an illness, can make rehydration much harder to do.
Who Experiences Sudden Thirst?
Sudden thirst can happen for many reasons. More common occurrences are physical activity, diabetes, anemia, and taking certain medications. Physical activity is a daily routine for many and we expel fluids and electrolytes when we sweat. For an individual with diabetes, sugars are unable to process through the body properly. This can force the kidneys to work overtime to get rid of all of the excess sugar in the body through urine. Water can even be pulled from the tissues to produce more urine, making us desperately thirsty. For those with anemia, healthy red blood cells are difficult for the body to produce, which then causes the body to struggle to make enough oxygen. The body loses red blood cells faster than replacing them and causes weakness, fatigue, and thirst. Dry mouth occurs when the glands in our mouths don’t make enough saliva. This is extremely common for those who smoke, take certain medications, or have side effects from the radiation for cancer.
Some of the less common occurrences of sudden thirst are hyperglycemia, thyroid, and pregnancy. Hyperglycemia is typically associated with diabetes because it occurs when too much sugar is in the blood and the body cannot create enough insulin. This can cause vision problems, vomiting, and thirst. Each thyroid case varies from person to person and can have different severity levels. However, all thyroid cases have similar symptoms, including dehydration and lack of saliva. For expecting mothers, thirst and excessive urination are typical occurrences. In some cases, pregnant women will experience gestational diabetes, affecting only 6-9% of women during pregnancy.
So what is the best solution to all of these situations? Drink some water! It's amazing how different our bodies can feel when we increase our water intake by only 1-2 glasses each day. It's important to remind ourselves that we only get one body. We need to take care of ourselves to the best of our ability. Dehydration is a severe condition, unfortunately, often ignored. If we took hydration more seriously, it would improve the health of millions.

Hard Seltzer
Hard seltzers, growing in brands by 20% each year, have been leading the way in the beverage industry for the last several years. The predictions for 2022 are only showing more growth. The unstoppable White Claw Hard Seltzers continue to take the lead in the hard seltzer category, followed by Truly and in third, Bud Light seltzer. One hard seltzer that hit a hard fall in 2021 is Travis Scott's beverage, Cacti. At the end of December 2021, Anheuser-Busch announced that they were discontinuing Scott’s drink line in the wake of the Astroworld festival tragedy that killed 10 people in the crowd. While there’s no saying what may happen with the rapper's beverage, we know at least three seltzer brands that will be coming in hot and paving the way for all other brands.
Flavors
Consumers each year are taken aback by innovations with bigger, better, and bolder opportunities. In 2021, Truly includes a never-ending list of flavors and E & J Gallo’s Barefoot Oreo Wine ended the year with a limited-edition surprise that sold out within hours. The new year is expected to include new flavorful beverages. In the past, we often tasted beverages with a slightly fruity taste, and for many, it was all they needed. Now, consumers are looking for more spontaneous options, such as those in the botanical scene. Flavors such as hibiscus, lavender, and elderflower are selected and used to create the perfect cocktail. With the market as competitive as it was in 2021, beverage makers are forced to get creative and differentiate themselves from the others, opting for bigger and bolder selections.
Sustainability and Packaging
There are increasingly more issues with canning beverages. The manufacturing process for recycling, sustainability, and more eco-friendly packaging are all becoming more popular for brands. Several beverage companies that previously used cans or heavy bottles have switched to recyclable options such as Tetra Pak cartons. As stated on their website, “75% of Tetra Pak cartons are made from paperboard, 20% of polyethylene, and 5% of aluminum.” They weigh 60% less than a can, not to mention a bottle too. This not only cuts transportation costs but also lowers carbon emissions.
Ecommerce and Third-party Deliveries
When the pandemic hit in March of 2020, everything we knew used to do without a second thought, including going out and shopping for ourselves, no longer felt safe. Everyone started ordering everything online, from groceries to alcohol. E-commerce delivery made sales skyrocket. Jeff Carroll, general manager of Avalara for Beverage Alcohol, states, “More than half (54%) of online alcohol shoppers in the U.S. made their first purchase during the pandemic.” Third-party delivery sites, like Drizly, have grown substantially. These innovative business strategies continue to grow for easier access for both consumers and retailers.
New Year's Eve is one of the best (and most popular) holidays for drinking. With all of the parties and events to bring us into a new year, we want to make sure we celebrate it right. For many, that includes having the perfect bottle of champagne to accompany the night. Whether it’s a party for 100 at a penthouse in New York City or a single bottle for two cooped up by the fire in a small town, why not celebrate with the perfect drink? Here are some popular options to celebrate the start of the new year and tips to differentiate real champagne from sparkling wine.
What exactly is champagne?
Before buying the first bottle you see at the liquor store labeled as champagne, it’s a good idea to know what to look for. Many don’t realize that when purchasing a bottle of bubbly, not all champagne is real champagne. There’s a difference between champagne and sparkling wine. It’s important to know that while all champagne is sparkling wine, not all sparkling wine is champagne. Real champagne solely comes from the champagne region in northern France. In the United States, champagne and wine are known as prosecco (Italian sparkling wine), cava (Spanish sparkling wine), and sparkling wine. These drinks use a blend of three grapes: chardonnay, pinot noir, and Pinot Meunier.
Champagne Recommendations
Best Value (Low Price): Piper-Heidsieck Cuvee Brut
A bottle of champagne that's good enough to have Marilyn Monroe sip on it as we sip on our Starbucks. “Marilyn was rumored to keep a month’s supply of Piper-Heidsieck in her kitchen to dip into anytime the day lagged, or the rest of the population seemed disappointingly un-Marilyn.” Founded in 1785, the company has consistently been a favorite and made its way from Marie Antoniette to Marlyn Monroe. As of 2020, it was named as the official champagne of the Oscars. For a lower-priced (real) champagne, the value is sure to stay the same.
Buy it at Total Wine for $39.99.
Best for Parties (Mid Price): Beau Joie Brut Champagne (Special Cuvée)
Anyone looking for a great bottle of champagne to bring to a party should look no further. Beau Joie Brut Champagne is 100% recycled copper that also serves the purpose of keeping the champagne cool in the bottle. The beverage itself has a clean, crisp taste that is the perfect balance between sweet and dry with no added sugars. This party champagne is the perfect option to splurge on without having to overspend on a bottle.
Buy it at Drizly for $89.99.

Best Higher End (Higher Price): Krug Grande Cuvée Brut
With the start of a new year upon us, we can’t help but splurge. Sometimes, that involves purchasing an expensive bottle of champagne. The perfect splurge bottle for an occasion like this is the Krug Grande Cuvée Brut. Created in 1843, Krug Grande Cuvèe Brut is “the fullest expression of Champagne, re-created every year, regardless of annual climate variations.” This fancy champagne combines over 120 wines from over 10 different years of creations, blending different flavors and giving the experience that other competitors don’t.
Buy it at Total Wine for $199.97.
Dom Pèrignon-A French classic champagne produces its champagne that has aged for a minimum of seven years to develop its deep flavors and aromas. This particular bottle gives warmth and freshness and has several unique flavors, including white flowers, citrus, stone fruit. Also, the aniseed and crushed mint ingredients, with aromas of spicy, woody, and roasted notes, enhance the flavor of the drink.

In March of 2020, chaos emerged as a result of our first lockdown. As businesses began shutting down, alcohol sales rose to astronomical numbers and began taking over, 'comforting' millions of Americans. Unfortunately, this number increased over the months, showing the severity of abuse. After two years into the pandemic, has our mental health and coping improved? Or is it just as bad?
It’s no surprise that we are relying on alcohol (or other substances) to calm our anxiety. Together, we experienced the loss of loved ones. Unemployment led to financial stress and food insecurity, which swept the nation into miles of stretched food bank lines. It's no surprise that one of the biggest reasons for substance abuse is social isolation. As our socialization habits deteriorated, our mental health became a bigger concern.
Women Drinking More Than Ever
Typically, men consume more alcohol than women. However, since the pandemic began, this finding has started to take a turn. Men's consumption has stayed fairly level, only increasing by approximately 8%. The alarming numbers are mostly coming from women. Alcohol consumption increased for women by 10%. This number includes binge drinking (four or more drinks every two hours), which increased their numbers by a staggering 23%.
While a shocking number, it's not overly surprising as a majority of the women stayed home to care for and homeschool their children when everything transitioned remotely. Because they couldn’t find childcare, many women were forced to quit their job, meaning a loss of income.
Although typical for individuals to have a few drinks during the week to unwind (the recommendation is no more than 7 for women and 14 for men/week), the pandemic has turned the occasion into a reliant one. Building an unhealthy habit increases the chance of an alcohol-use disorder. Those, especially those having to homeschool children, that increased their drinking were parents who rarely drank alcohol pre-pandemic.
Alcohol-related Deaths
If the 800,000 COVID-related deaths aren’t bad enough, the alcohol-related deaths are causing an added strain on front-line workers and loved ones. A report stated a 54% increase in national alcohol sales for the week ending March 21, 2020, compared to one year prior; online sales increased to 262% from 2019. Three weeks later, the World Health Organization sent out a warning regarding alcohol use during the pandemic that may potentially worsen health concerns and “risk-taking behaviors.” A warning only has so much effect on individuals, and it’s understandable for people to cope in some way with the last few years that we’ve had. Luckily, many individuals called the national helpline, organized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This hotline is a safe and beneficial source, providing help to those facing emotional distress during times of need. From February to March of 2021, SAMHSA saw a 338% increase in calls. Even with an increase in individuals seeking help with this hotline, 95,000 people are dying from alcohol-related causes each year.
Little things Making a Difference
To cope with the isolation and anxiousness each day, we have to learn to make healthy habits for ourselves and those around us. Being vaccinated has brought us a long way from where we were even a year ago. The vaccine has now allowed us to spend holidays with family and no longer be cooped up in our homes. Although we are still fighting COVID, we've figured out ways to be around people and do activities outside. Kids are back in schools, where teachers can educate them. Jobs are growing more than ever, with over 11 million opportunities available. These factors alone may not be a quick fix for our mental health, but it’s a positive step in the right direction.
If you or a loved one is experiencing mental health and/or substance abuse disorder and needs help, call SAMHSA’s free hotline 1-800-662-HELP (4357), available 24/7/365.

For most, the holidays are a time for celebrating with family and friends, creating long-lasting memories, and relaxing after what feels like a very long year. While this is how many will spend their holidays, others will spend theirs alone, mourning, or at the hospital, saying goodbye to their loved ones. Two of the happiest, most celebrated dates—Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve—are also two of the most dangerous. In 2018, drunk driving crashes killed 108 people on these two days alone. Thankfully, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has been decreasing fatalities for the past four decades and works with law enforcement during December to raise awareness during National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.
The History of MADD
Mothers Against Drunk Driving started in 1980 when one mom’s tragedy turned into one of the most influential non-profit organizations. On May 3, 1980, thirteen-year-old Cari Lightner and a friend were walking to a church carnival in Fair Oaks, California when Cari was struck by a car from behind. The driver, Clarence Busch, had just been released from jail two days prior for a fourth DUI arrest. When Cari’s mother, Candy Lightner, learned that the act of drunk driving was seldomly prosecuted with significant time spent behind bars, she decided to take her action, and MADD was born. After lobbying California’s governor, Jerry Brown, to set up a task force that would look into drunk driving incidents, Lightner became the first member of the task force and has been a part of major accomplishments since then. For example,
1981
While MADD explodes nationwide, Lightner helps pass a law placing minimum fines of $375 for drunk drivers and mandatory imprisonment at a maximum of four years for repeat offenders.
1982
President Regan asks Lightner to serve on the National Commission against Drunk Driving.
1984
The U.S. Congress raises the national minimum drinking age to 21.
1990
Supreme Court upholds sobriety checkpoints as constitutional.
1995
Zero Tolerance is passed into federal law. Zero Tolerance states that it's illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to be under the influence of alcohol while driving by any limit. This law was then passed by all 50 states in 1998.
2000
President Clinton signs the federal law lowering the legal Blood Alcohol Level (BAC) from 0.1% to 0.08%. This law was then passed by all 50 states in 2004.
What has MADD been up to in the last 20 years?
In the last two decades, MADD has attempted to enact laws including ignition interlocks, which all 50 states offer as options, but only 30 states require them after a DUI charge. MADD has also released school programs to connect parents with their teens regarding underage drinking, its consequences, and solutions to avoid it. In addition, 14 teams on the NFL participated in spreading awareness of drinking under the influence by asking their fans to pledge to be the most valuable position—the designated driver. By taking these actions, in 2019, there were only 10,142 fatalities due to alcohol-impaired motor vehicle drivers. This statistic is a 5.3% decrease from the previous year and approximately a 40% decrease from 1980 (also when MADD was founded).
How has the pandemic increased drunk driving-related fatalities?
Unfortunately, the number of fatalities increased when the pandemic hit. It seemed as though many were saving on gas with the decreased 430 billion miles driven, but somehow drunk driving collisions increased by 9% in 2020 compared to 2019. With a total of 38,680 people killed from motor vehicle crashes in 2020, it can be inferred that the pandemic influenced stress, which then had an impact on drinking levels. However, this situation doesn’t hold as an excuse for drinking behind the wheel. The only acceptable number of fatalities is 0. Anyone that drives on the road needs to do their part in looking out for not only themselves but also those around them.

As much as we love holidays filled with our crazy families and binge eating food, those of us who have to travel often dread the long hours of being in a car, train, or plane ride. Between the travel and non-stop festivities, most are desperate for rest and recovery when we get home. The weather and humidity during travel combined with the alcohol consumption and (sugary) foods consumed during the holiday can throw any of us off our balance. Even throughout the holidays, it's prominent that we continue to take care of our body and its needs.
Hydration is a daily essential that 75% of Americans seem to neglect. These levels decrease further during the holiday season due to drinking, traveling, and overeating. Among the wine during Thanksgiving, spiked eggnog on Christmas, and champagne on New Year's Eve, 69% of people are more likely to overindulge during this time of year, often due to socializing. Beverage Daily reports, “The average American sees a 100% increase in their alcoholic drinking habits between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.”
The holidays are about relaxing and having fun with loved ones, which for many, includes having a few drinks. To stay hydrated, remember to drink a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage consumed. Staying hydrated is more than just for thirst, though. During summer, we lose water from sweat; during winter, humidity levels drop because water from our skin tends to evaporate at a quicker level. If this is the situation (as it is for most this time of year), drinking an adequate amount of water will help prevent dry skin and chapped lips. Not only will water increase hydration levels, but it will also curb any weight-gaining habits.
Moderate symptoms of dehydration can include increased wrinkles, dry eyes, thirst, fatigue, low urine output, dry mouth, headache, or dizziness. Severe dehydration may result in low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, extreme thirst, loss of skin elasticity, little or no urination, confusion, and fever. According to The Global Traveler, "adequate water intake also prevents deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs), or heart attacks, especially when traveling."
Hydration is not only important when consuming alcohol, but also when traveling. A plane generally flys approximately 30,000 feet up in the air, which is around 10% humidity, dramatically increasing the chance for dehydration due to the high altitude. The dryness in the air may not feel noticeable, but it does cause our nasal passages to dry out, making it easier for any virus or bacteria to get in. To avoid these situations, spraying a face mist might help, but drinking eight ounces of water for every hour of the flight will be a more effective method for hydration. Bringing an electrolyte supplement like DrinkLyte’s mix packets is perfect in aiding rehydration during and after travel. These packets are pocket-sized, which makes them easier to bring on the plane. Try to avoid drinking beverages that contain sugar, caffeine, or alcohol, as these can only worsen dehydration symptoms.
Long and tiring travels might not always be exciting, but preparing ahead of time will give us the best outcome. For instance, increasing water intake just a few days before a trip can also help with hydration. Ultimately, although staying hydrated during the holidays is crucial to our health, the most important thing is to have fun, relax, and enjoy the holidays with loved ones.

With 3 out of 4 Americans suffering from dehydration each day, it’s no secret that we have an epidemic on our hands. Many are aware that they are dehydrated, but they fail to realize that dehydration can have a dangerous effect on their overall health. Dehydration can be a sign of multiple health issues—one of them being deficient in electrolytes or an electrolyte imbalance.
What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals vital to our everyday health because of their many benefits. These can include nerve and muscle function, hydration, balancing blood acidity, and helping rebuild damaged tissue from physical activity. The more common electrolytes include sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, phosphorus, and magnesium.
How are electrolytes lost?
Electrolytes are lost in a few different ways and vary for each person depending on their daily activities. "Sodium losses average about 1 gram per liter of sweat lost. So if someone loses 1 liter of sweat per hour, they are also losing about 1 gram of sodium per hour, on average. The body also loses chloride in large amounts via sweat, followed with potassium, magnesium, and calcium, albeit in smaller amounts.”
Why do we need them?
Dehydration is often accompanied by electrolyte imbalances. An electrolyte balance occurs when the concentration of a mineral, or electrolyte, becomes too high or too low relative to the amount of water available in the body. When the mineral concentration is high compared to the water, the cells begin to shrink, causing hypernatremia (too much salt in the blood). Hypernatremia can be fatal if not treated. When potassium levels in the blood are too low, hypokalemia can occur, causing abnormal heart rhythms and muscle cramps. Hypokalemia is common and more dangerous in older patients. Hyperchloremia occurs when there is too much chloride in the blood compared to the body's water level. While chloride aids in saliva enzymes and digestion, its levels are managed by the kidneys, which is vital in functioning the body. The kidneys maintain adequate fluid levels and balance electrolytes. To keep electrolyte levels balanced, fluid levels in the body need to be normal.
How Can I Keep a Healthy Balance of Electrolytes?
There are a variety of minerals that are needed each day. Luckily, there are several sources that one can take to increase their intake of electrolytes. Every day, eating an endless option of foods replenishes the electrolytes.
Below is a list of foods that contain electrolytes:
If finding foods with electrolytes is difficult, consume drinks with naturally-containing electrolytes instead. Products such as milk, coconut water, orange juice, and soy milk contain magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Coconut water is a more popular choice as it contains multiple electrolytes, such as potassium, magnesium, sodium, and calcium. Coconut water is also naturally low in sugar (compared to other sports recovery drinks on the market). An alternative to coconut water that is more effective for replenishing electrolytes is drinking an electrolyte recovery product that contains an Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). ORS starts rehydrating the body immediately and replenishes the lost electrolytes.
It can be difficult to self-diagnose dehydration, especially if one is constantly dehydrated. The best solution to prevent dehydration and electrolyte imbalance is consistently drinking water throughout the day. Consuming a well-balanced diet will ensure a natural intake of electrolytes from foods and drinks as well.

]]>Because 75% of Americans suffer from dehydration, rehydrating the body is one of the best things they can do for their health. After a hard workout or even being sick, it can feel impossible to keep up with normal hydration levels. Therefore, choosing a hydration product that works best for the body is important. Sports drinks, electrolyte-formulated product mixes, and natural foods all provide hydration, making the list of products seems endless to choose from. So, here are a few different ways one can rehydrate throughout the day.
Natural Fruit Hydration
Coconut water has been around for a long time, and humans have discovered its never-ending list of benefits. For instance, this product improves skin, hair, and hydration. Coconut water is a go-to recovery after working out on a hot day. As coconuts grow in tropical weather, they have the most liquid inside (½ to 1 cup) around approximately six to seven months. Consuming coconut water, containing 94% water, is a great alternative to regular water when replenishing electrolytes and nutrients. Minerals found in coconuts such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium are all crucial for rehydration. Therefore, coconut water makes a great rehydrating product, but make sure to keep an eye on its extra calories and sugar levels.
Sports Drinks
Gatorade is another product that has been a consumer favorite for decades. Athletes and hungover party-goers feel as though it's a life-saver. However, others seem to forgo this option because Gatorade claims to help consumers recover but its ingredients include artificial ingredients and high amounts of sugar. Although it deems a quick way to recover from dehydration, there are better alternatives on the market that can just as effectively replenish the lost electrolytes. For instance, G2 is Gatorade’s low-sugar version. This only has 30 calories and 7 grams of sugar per serving (12 fluid ounces). This might sound like a better option, but with the 28 ounces bottle having 16 grams of sugar, it's important to look at the nutrition label. To avoid drinking the entire bottle, checking the label allows consumers to pace themselves.
Healthy Electrolyte Rehydration Mixes
Unlike competitors, electrolyte-packed beverage mixes, such as Ultima Replenisher, don’t have all of the added sugar. These drink mixes are marketed to individuals who work out or need to revive after feeling under the weather. These mixes include minerals such as calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. All of the ingredients are natural and use Stevia as an alternative to cane sugar. Ultima is perfect for those looking for zero calories, zero sugar, and zero carbs. Because of the electrolytes and healthier formula, Ultima aids a wide variety of consumers.
ORS Electrolyte Rehydration
DrinkLyte is similar to Ultima as a drink mix, but DrinkLyte’s formula contains an ingredient that other sports and rehydration mixes don’t provide: the Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). ORS was created in the 1960s to originally treat those with mild to severe dehydration. It was created by combining water, sugar, and electrolytes. DrinkLyte follows the World Health Organization protocols to ensure that the formula effectively and immediately starts rehydrating. Even though the ORS contains a small amount of sugar, it is only enough to activate the formula. Therefore, because of its formula, DrinkLyte is IV-effective and packs electrolytes into a convenient on-the-go packet or can. This is a suitable product for a wider variety of consumers than other rehydration products. DrinkLyte is also known as a post-alcohol rehydration solution, but the product is also effective for everyday use. Consumers are taking advantage of it by using the product for workouts, jet lag, and fatigue.

From kids in crazy costumes getting hyped up on pillowcases of candy to adults indulging in cocktails, Halloween is a holiday to celebrate traditions at any age. With the pandemic having suspended all festivities last year, Halloween is coming back in full force, encouraging alcohol drinkers to step it up a notch.
According to one study, Halloween is ranked number five out of all holidays for the amount of consumed alcohol. College students are a majority of the portion among these statistics, reporting consumption of an average of 6.3 alcoholic beverages. This amount is 1.4 times more than they would consume on a regular weekend night. However, due to higher consumption of alcohol than usual, the chances of drunk driving accidents increase dramatically. Federal traffic data report that 50% of fatal motor vehicle accidents involve alcohol-impaired drivers.
So, before getting carried away with the Halloween fun, keep some of these tips in mind to ensure a safe experience.
Providing Non-Alcoholic Beverages
Having adult beverages at a party is always a perk, but they shouldn’t be the only option. Not everyone partakes in consuming alcohol, such as those allocated to be the designated driver. For convenience and safety, be sure to stock up on bottled water so that everyone can stay hydrated in between drinks. An alternative to water is Drinklyte, which is the perfect go-to hydration solution. This option is for those who do decide to drink so they can rehydrate right away.
Know Your Limits/Designated Driver
Halloween is the day to be resourceful by keeping track of one’s intake and knowing one’s limits. On Halloween, 9.3% of men and 6.6% of women have blacked out from drinking. People tend to get carried away in the moment, and the next thing they know, it’s too late. Make sure to alternate with water in between each drink as well. If there is any chance of drinking involved, find a designated driver or call an Uber. Don’t be another statistic.
Never Set Your Drink Down
Knowing one’s limits is one thing, but smart drinking is a whole different level. One of the safety precautions is never to set one's drink down or let it out of sight. Drinks can easily be drugged since the substance is typically colorless and flavorless. A study surveyed from a total of 6,064 students from 3 universities discovered that more than 7.8% reported having been drugged at some point in the last few years, while 1.4% had admitted to drugging someone else. It may be easy to set a drink down, but it’s even easier to take advantage of someone by slipping drugs into a drink.
Look After Your Friends
Although everyone has to look out for their well-being, they should also be looking out for their friends. There is nothing better than a good party and throwing back a few drinks, but be aware of your surroundings at the same time. When alcohol becomes involved at any level, everything changes—DUI’s, pedestrian deaths (from impaired drivers), date rape, blackouts, and alcohol poisoning all become a possibility. While we might feel under control, our friends may have different limits.
Halloween is a holiday for any age and should be celebrated in any capacity. Even though COVID is looking better than it was around this time last year, it’s still important to take CDC precautions. For instance, practice social distancing, wearing masks, and sanitizing throughout the evening. Safety precautions can be taken and still make a memorable Halloween.

]]>DrinkLyte is known for its lightning-fast rehydration formula. This product lets consumers have the best of both worlds: a social life without having to worry about being hungover the next day. Anyone who has tried the formula knows how effective (and delicious) it is, waking up feeling hydrated and ready to start the day.
DrinkLyte employs an Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), a formula originally designed to treat those with severe dehydration. Using a simple combination of water, glucose sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium citrate create a quick, IV-effective solution to dehydration. ORS works wonders to rehydrate individuals after drinking, but there are some other ways that this medical-grade success supports the body, with or without alcohol consumption.
Alternatives reasons to use an ORS:
Dehydration
Dehydration is a common issue, considering 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. The loss of water from the body is due to factors such as sweating, breathing, and urinating. Individuals that work out regularly need to be aware of dehydration, especially in weather where heat exhaustion can occur. Exercise also causes the loss of fluids through sweating. Therefore, the more sweat that is produced, the more dehydrated one becomes. To properly recover from a workout, use an ORS to treat and prevent dehydration.
Cognitive Function
Even just the slightest level of dehydration increases the chance of impairing one’s focus, cognitive function, and motor functions.
Studies conducted on the effects of dehydration in correlation to focus and motor function concluded:
Provides Minerals
When the body loses too much fluid, the cells and tissues become depleted of water and nutrients, leading to dehydration. ORS provides the simple ingredients of salt, sugar, and water to treat dehydration. These electrolytes are also essential to support one’s overall health, not just dehydration. On the other hand, there is a possibility of consuming too many electrolytes as well. A surplus of each mineral can cause mild to moderate, and in some cases, dangerous injuries, such as:
The best way to ensure a proper level of hydration is to listen to the body. Look for any dehydration symptoms, including thirst, dry skin, fatigue, dizziness, and the color of one’s urine. For many, drinking enough water throughout the day is difficult, but ORS has proven to be a smart everyday alternative. Populations that live in warmer climates or individuals who do physical activity will want to consider using ORS to replace the depleted electrolytes. Drinklyte is not only the perfect solution for post-alcohol rehydration but truly the perfect solution for any occasion.

After a night of drinking, some wonder how their body reacts to alcohol under different circumstances. Some may wake up the next morning feeling great; Others might start the day with a pounding headache and vomiting. We know some of the more common symptoms of hangovers such as nausea, dizziness, dehydration, and vomiting. But what goes on within our system that causes these symptoms to happen? Twenty-four hours a day, our body works to stay healthy and functional. However, consuming alcohol (or other toxic substances) can cause the body to work in overdrive to recover and prevent dangers.
Dehydration
It’s no secret that dehydration is one of the main factors when drinking alcohol. Alcohol prevents the body from releasing the antidiuretic hormone ADH (also called vasopressin). While the body typically releases ADH, sending signals to the kidneys to hold on to water, drinking alcohol can make this process more difficult. ADH suppresses when we drink, causing our kidneys to lose more fluid because we urinate more frequently. This causes dehydration and results in headaches and nausea. Overall, alcohol causes and worsens dehydration symptoms.
Electrolyte Imbalance
Electrolytes are essential for healthy living and play a crucial role regarding alcohol. When we urinate, we lose fluids and electrolytes. Magnesium, sodium, potassium, and calcium are a few electrolytes that become depleted during drinking sessions. A way to check our body's electrolyte levels is through a healthcare professional. An electrolyte panel measures the levels of our main electrolytes, and results can show an imbalance caused by too little or too much fluid. For instance, drinking a high amount of alcohol or even certain medications such as antacids and blood pressure medicines can ultimately create an imbalance.
Acetaldehyde
Other than the occasional glass of red wine, alcohol is typically not labeled as a health product due to its many toxins. When broken down in the body, ADH metabolizes alcohol into acetaldehyde (a highly toxic chemical and carcinogen). The acetaldehyde is then further metabolized into another chemical called acetate. Once the process is completed, the substance is decomposed into water and carbon dioxide. These products are then naturally eliminated by waste.
GABA
Metabolizing and removing toxins from alcohol forces the body to work overtime. The brain plays a vital part in leading the process altogether. The body and brain work simultaneously, using neurotransmitters called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is a naturally occurring amino acid that sends messages throughout the nervous system. Alcohol can harm the production of neurotransmitters, reducing activity in the brain. Consequently, this negatively contributes to short and long-term side effects on one's physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The loss of GABA can affect motor skills, slurred speech, blurred vision, and impaired judgment.
Avoiding Hangovers
Hangover's aren't 100% avoidable, but there are ways to minimize some of the dreadful symptoms and still have a good time. Always eat nutritionally beneficial foods before drinking, including foods with high protein, healthy fats, and vitamins or minerals. An easy and effective way to replenish depleted electrolytes is by adding a rehydration solution, such as Drinklyte. This product allows the body to safely and effectively start the recovery process as soon as possible. The last and most important tip is to drink water. Consistently drinking water before, during, and after drinking alcohol will help with rehydration and hangover symptoms. Rehydrating is crucial for replacing electrolytes, keeping our kidneys functioning properly, and, of course, avoiding those dreadful hangovers.

]]>It’s unsurprising that cannabis and alcohol are two of the most commonly used substances. Both share the outcome of relaxation when used individually, but they're often consumed together. Combining the two substances is a common act called ‘crossfading.’ Although crossfading may not cause any major health concerns (in most cases), there are still potential harmful effects that can occur from person to person.
Drinking before Smoking
Thanks to the psychoactive ingredient in weed, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), drinking alcohol before smoking marijuana can greatly increase the intensity of a person’s high. For those who are used to smoking, it may not bother them. However, for others, it can be very uncomfortable and cause a ‘green out.’ A green out occurs when someone feels sick after smoking too much weed. Symptoms of a green out include (but are not limited to):
Joseph R. Volpicelli, medical director of the Volpicelli Center, (an addiction treatment facility in Pennsylvania) states that no matter the type of alcohol, it will still increase the absorption of THC in cannabis products by priming liver enzymes. Unfortunately, THC affects not only the liver but also other body parts. “Alcohol relaxes smooth muscle, so the arteries relax, which increases blood flow to many parts of the body. When you inhale marijuana, it crosses the barrier between the lung and the blood vessels,” Volpicelli explains. “Because there’s more blood flowing to the lungs, marijuana gets absorbed faster and more efficiently.”
Smoking before Drinking
THC affects how alcohol is metabolized as well. Inhaling cannabis before drinking causes the alcohol to be pulled from our GI tract at a slower rate than normal. Consequently, this causes a delayed effect from alcohol. This then affects the brain because our decision-making is impaired from the combination of the two. Therefore, the best advice for someone in this situation is that if a person does smoke weed first, they should probably drink less than they normally would.
Short-term Effects
While both are not likely to cause severe long-term damage, cannabis and alcohol still have some short-term consequences that we need to be cautious of.
Diuretic: Drinking alcohol is known to cause dehydration due to frequent urination. Even though smoking isn’t specifically a diuretic, it can still contribute to the problem. This occurs especially in situations when a person experiences symptoms of nausea and vomiting.
Toxicity: Because consuming weed before alcohol can cause a delayed effect, someone may forget the number of drinks they took. This can lead to over-consuming alcohol, which then leads to toxicity. Thus, it’s crucial to monitor how many drinks are being consumed.
Temporary memory impairment: Occasional smoking can cause a temporary impairment in the brain. On the contrary, the chance of impairment is decreased when chronic smokers build tolerance over time. Be cautious when adding alcohol into the mix, though. Consumption of both cannabis and alcohol can cause stronger impairments to return.
Reduced Cognitive Function: Consumption of marijuana and alcohol can result in decreased attention span, poor memory, and lower IQ (especially in those whose brains are still developing).
Long-term Effects
Alcohol Dependency: While smoking weed is a direct factor of alcoholism, smoking can cause alcoholism indirectly. Someone can become dependent on drinking because of the delayed reaction in impairment. Alcohol then can cause liver damage, kidney damage, heart problems, and cognitive impairments.
Cannabis Dependency: Smoking over a long period can increase the risk of lung damage. According to the American Lung Association, cannabis smokers are at a greater risk of tar exposure because they inhale deeply and tend to hold their breath longer than cigarette smokers.
So is it Safe to Smoke and Drink Simultaneously?
Generally, yes—it is safe to combine cannabis and alcohol. However, alleviating the symptoms of these products requires time. Remember that even the tiniest differences, such as the order in which we consume them, can dramatically change our experience under the influence. Be safe by taking precautions and starting small.

]]>Less than a decade ago, the discussion of hangover products was not a popular topic. One of the best-known go-to hangover remedies was an electrolyte solution brand targeted to help dehydrated children. Now worth almost $2 billion in 2021, the hangover cure market is expected to reach a whopping $4.67 billion by 2028, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Hangover products no longer serve just one solution anymore. With the wellness market expanding, many companies are instead integrating other health aspects into their hydration or hangover products to give consumers a multifunctional type of beverage.
Where it Started
When consumers first started searching for hangover products, the pick was thin and many consumers resorted to whatever they could find. Pain relievers, a $3.7 Billion market back in 2013, were often used to subside some of the symptoms instead. Specifically, many chose ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol). There were brands such as PartySmart (a Himalayan anti-hangover product) and Drinkin’ Mate (an all-natural wild guava leaf extract tablet) that provided a more natural way to cure hangover symptoms. Products like these seemed to attract health-conscious consumers, increasing the market from $1.6 Billion to 1.9 Billion (from 2013 to 2018). Alka-Seltzer antacids ‘morning-relief’ were also popularly used as a hangover product. However, they were unfortunately discontinued twice from the manufacturer, Bayer. Fortunately, Blowfish tablets are a great replacement for the Alka-Seltzer capsules, as they are specifically geared towards relieving hangovers. After launching almost a decade ago, they are still going strong, stocked in 11,000 stores nationwide.
When the reality of COVID hit, millions of people started making significant changes to their daily routines, choosing healthier products, including around their drinking habits. The enhanced water beverage market is increasing health awareness and attracting a target of younger generations, who have replaced sugary, toxic soft drinks with more functional choices. These types of beverages are not only marketed as a hangover cure but also have other added benefits.
A Cure for Everyone
The Plug is the first plant-based alcohol recovery drink. In addition to aiding with hangovers, The Plug also offers products for immunity, zero caffeine energy, liver detox, and stress relief. Liquid I.V. is another popular brand that while not marketed towards hangovers, is widely used as a rehydration method after alcohol consumption because of its hydration multiplier. Liquid I.V. offers three times the hydration using Cellular Transport Technology. Some of their other products are more focused on improving specific functions such as immunity, sleep, and energy. While multipurpose hangover products can be extremely effective (with or without the consumption of alcohol), there are times where less is more. DrinkLyte is one of the leading night-life hydration products for after-alcohol consumption. While other companies are adding caffeine, vitamins, and minerals (which can reduce the effectiveness of the product), Drinklyte keeps it natural and simple with one main component: electrolytes. Following the same protocols as the World Health Organization, DrinkLyte has successfully been able to create the perfect I.V. effective hydration formula using Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). Without vitamins, minerals, and caffeine in the way, DrinkLyte’s ultimate hydration performance outshines the rest.
The Future of Hangover Products
Some always hope to cure hangovers completely, but it’s not quite that simple. This doesn’t mean that we can’t treat or alleviate some of the symptoms that arise with hangovers. We’ve come a long way in just the last few years with capsules, powdered drink mixes, ready-to-drink beverages, and even IV therapies. These beverages or supplements, regardless of drinking alcohol or not, can be beneficial to anyone.

Too often, results from alcohol can cause one to become dizzy, have slurred speech, or even impaired memory in the short term. However, too much can start to affect us long-term. Throughout our lifetime, our brain will experience five different stages, both physical and mental. While the brain physically continues to grow (age 11 for girls and 14 for boys), it matures mentally (and emotionally) until the mid to late twenties. The prefrontal cortex also plays a major role during this stage of life regarding decision-making, especially concerning alcohol. More specifically, this body part is responsible for planning, prioritizing, and controlling impulses, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. If making responsible choices, one can allow these functions to consume alcohol while living a healthy life.
Several factors can play a part in how alcohol will affect an individual's life:
Oxford’s Gray Matter Study
A study conducted at the University of Oxford looked at the alcohol intake of 25,000 people and their brain scans. Drinking concluded a negative effect on memory problems and a potential risk factor for dementia. The results also showed that drinking any alcohol affected the brains gray matter (where pieces of information are processed). Overall, the study proved that higher consumption of alcohol leads to less volume of gray matter.
Short-term Effects of Alcohol on the Brain
Short-term effects of alcohol can range from mild, common symptoms, such as vomiting and confusion, to fatal symptoms. Blackouts are typical for college students. Out of 772 surveyed, 51% claimed to have experienced one. Most cases of blackouts documented are a result of binge drinking (drinking too much too fast). Although some remember parts of their experience, others may not remember anything.
Long-term Effects of Alcohol on the Brain
Comparison samples were taken of female and male brain shrinkage by using imaging. The long-term effects of alcohol showed significant brain damage. Learning and memory problems resulted in heavy drinking for both males and females. Up to 80% of those that struggle with alcoholism are associated with thiamine deficiency. Thiamine (Vitamin B1) is a nutrient required by all tissues—including the brain—and some of those that have the deficiency will develop brain disorders later in life, including Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS). There are two syndromes within the disease: Wernicke’s encephalopathy and Korsakoff’s Psychosis.
Wernicke’s encephalopathy is a short-lived and severe condition that includes mental confusion, paralysis of the nerves, and difficulty with muscle coordination. Studies conducted after a patient's death revealed several cases of thiamine deficiency-related encephalopathy. The condition may go undiagnosed during life because the signs and symptoms aren't as easily recognizable.
Korsakoff’s psychosis, on the other hand, is a chronic and debilitating syndrome characterized by persistent learning and memory problems. Approximately 80 to 90 percent of alcoholics with Wernicke’s encephalopathy also develop Korsakoff’s psychosis. Those with Korsakoff’s psychosis are forgetful, easily frustrated, and have difficulty with walking and coordination.
Liver Disease
It is well-known that drinking can cause liver damage. However, long-term liver damage from alcohol consumption can also lead to brain damage, resulting in a serious and potentially fatal brain disorder known as hepatic encephalopathy. Changes in sleep patterns, mood, and personality are affected by this disorder. It can also cause psychiatric symptoms, cognitive effects, and coordination problems. In a worst-case scenario, a patient can ultimately fall into a deadly coma.
Not everyone who drinks will experience these effects, but it’s crucial to be aware of the precautions. Certain alcoholic beverages can have positive benefits, too. Living a healthy and balanced lifestyle might include drinking in moderation. In the long run, it’s important to think about how one’s actions in the present can potentially impact their future health.

As we slowly drift back into fall, some worries occupy our minds. Kids are going back to school, daily schedules are changing, and the awful flu season is creeping in. With both COVID-19 at its (potential), worst since the start of the pandemic and the annual flu season combined, a majority of what the next few months will bring for us is unknown. While vaccines are not 100% dependable or available for everyone, we still need to do everything we can to keep us (and those around us) as healthy as possible. Thus, maintaining any actions relating to health can be quite beneficial because no one enjoys being sick. So here are a few ways we can stay healthy without having to disrupt our day.
Getting Enough Sleep
As an adult, between work and the kids, getting enough sleep at night is often seen as unimportant these days. The CDC claims that one-third of the U.S. population is not getting enough sleep and that a minimum of seven hours are needed every night for better health. Insufficient sleep can cause short-term and long-term effects, such as memory problems, moodiness, car accidents, and even mistakes in the workplace. If we develop a viral infection, those cells will activate integrin (a sticky type of protein) to attach and kill the infected cells. However, we need to get an adequate amount of sleep for this to occur. Director of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of California Davis Kimberley Hardin, MD, leaves us all with a reminder that “sleep should leave you feeling refreshed, not groggy and struggling.”
Nutrition and Hydration
Growing up, we learned the importance of taking our vitamins to stay healthy, and for a good reason, too. Consuming a nutrient-dense diet and staying hydrated goes a long way in preventing (or fighting) a virus. Here are some of the main nutrients to focus on when boosting the immune system:
Our immune system is highly dependent on the nutrients in our bloodstream and with the bloodstream mostly made of water, it makes it even more crucial to stay hydrated. Just as water flushes out toxins in our bodies every day, water functions the same during a virus. In addition, drinking alcohol and coffee and working out can cause us to lose additional water from our bodies. If we do these dehydrating activities, we will need an extra boost to maintain their electrolyte levels to sustain hydration each day. Thus, DrinkLyte is a multi-functional product that will help with rehydrating, being IV-effective since it employs the Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). The ORS is used frequently in cases with diseases that cause dehydration and loss of electrolytes. This electrolyte hydration drink mix can be consumed whenever (drinking or not). Ultimately, both nutrition and hydration help with feeling full, hydrating, and staying energized throughout the day; therefore, it’s important to add both health factors for a healthy lifestyle and immune system.
Social Drinking boosts Immune System
Whether we feel it mentally, physically, or emotionally, stress can be extremely damaging to the body. Director of the Anxiety Disorders Center at Hartford Hospital’s Institute of Living David Tolin, Ph.D., said that “excess levels of stress produce hormonal changes that lower the body’s resistance to colds and other infections.” Luckily, there are a few ways to de-stress while boosting our immune system. For instance, socializing with friends is very important for our mental health. Not only will taking time out of our busy schedules to catch up with a friend improve our mental status, but this will also boost our immune system. Never feel guilty for taking those breaks when needed. Everyone gets burnt out now and then. Go for a run, have dinner and drinks with a friend, or take a trip to the salon. It will save your health.

One of the most important health tips that anyone can follow each day is stay hydrated, yet so many struggle with it. With summer still in full effect, high temperatures easily contribute to dehydration and dramatically increase when we perform strenuous activities. It’s crucial to know how and why dehydration levels lower our performance during exercise to prevent drying out throughout the day.
Why do we Sweat?
Exercise causes the body’s internal temperature to rise, and in order to cool down, the body produces sweat. While it may cool us down internally, we still lose fluids and electrolytes including sodium and chloride. Dr. Sara Filmalter, a Mayo Clinic family physician, states that "the purpose of rehydrating is using water or, even better, those electrolyte-containing beverages to pull fluid back into our system and rehydrate.” For instance, DrinkLyte’s products contain an ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution), which is used to treat dehydration symptoms. Therefore, DrinkLyte is a great way to replenish electrolytes either after a workout or as a daily hydration boost.
What is the Recommended Daily Intake?
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends women drink approximately 11.5 cups of water per day and for men, 15.5 cups. These amounts are calculated from an average person’s daily food and liquid intake. It’s also important to note that those who participate in physical activity need to consume more water than the amounts mentioned. While these are standard recommendations, not everyone’s intake will be the same. Factors including age, gender, weight, and length and intensity of workouts all impact our hydration levels, making everyone’s fluid intake different.
Without enough fluids in the system, the body cannot function properly. Dehydration can cause issues as small as migraines or fatigue and grow into more life-threatening risks, such as rapid heartbeat, seizures, and even strokes. Just as someone can become dehydrated, they can also over-hydrate. This occurs when the body holds onto more liquid than the kidneys can remove. Although it’s much less common, it still happens and can be deadly.
Hydration and Muscle Recovery
Believe it or not, hydration for the muscles is just as important. When building muscle from exercise, this causes them to break down and rebuild using muscle protein synthesis. For muscles to recover, they need to stay hydrated too, requiring those who exercise to maintain their fluid levels. Dehydration can affect injuries as well. The more dehydrated one is, the longer it takes for the body to heal.
Some tips to stay hydrated throughout the day:
The best thing to stay properly hydrated is to listen to the body. Many follow the statement, “drink to thirst” which simply means to drink when thirsty. Some may find this conflicted with facts about already being at dehydrated levels when thirsty. However, it’s important to consistently sip on water throughout the day, which can easily be done by keeping a bottle close by. Consuming water-rich foods and healthy electrolyte-replenishing fluids will keep the body happy throughout the day and, even happier, during those rigorous workouts.

Since the early days of the pandemic, many have struggled to get by. Adults have been forced to work from home while balancing kids' remote learning. Others have been on the front lines risking their lives every day—with more than half a million deaths occurring nationwide. However, everything started to look up at the beginning of summer: cities, bars, and restaurants began reopening. It felt as if that small freedom was given back to us. Initially going into lockdown, alcohol sales were at staggering numbers. It seemed as though it was just a phase. But in August of 2021, overconsumption of alcohol has continued to increase—something none of us thought we would have to deal with.
In 2020, 750,000 cancer cases were linked to alcohol consumption, showing a significant increase from previous years. When alcohol acts as an irritant in the body (for example, in the lining of the mouth, throat, or stomach), the body tries to heal itself. Unfortunately, this can result in abnormalities, thus causing cancer. Men are 75% more likely to develop cancer in their esophagus or liver, while women are prone to breast cancer. According to the 2019 U.S. data, women in their late teens to early twenties are drinking as much (or even more than men)—and they too are suffering the consequences.
It’s no secret that those who drink to cope are more likely to abuse alcohol down the road. Since the pandemic began, the effort to try and cope with alcohol has been more popular among parents of young children as they try to juggle even more duties than before. Research suggests that although both groups use alcohol as a coping strategy, women are more likely to use it as a coping mechanism than men are. One study looked at the effect that alcohol had on college students early in the pandemic and found an increase in alcohol use among those who reported higher stress and anxiety levels. In addition, several studies found that women were more likely to report drinking higher alcohol levels during the pandemic, especially if they experienced increased stress.
Using alcohol as a coping mechanism is known to help with daily stressors, trauma, and social anxiety. However, it is now turning into a long-term effect of COVID. Despite the calming properties over time, alcohol increases the effects of depression and anxiety. Researchers from NYU surveyed residents from all 50 states from March to April of last year. Out of the 5,850 respondents, 29% of them have increased drinking since the beginning of the pandemic. Those with depression are 64% and with anxiety, 41%, more likely to increase their amount of drinking.
While it’s perfectly normal (and even healthy) to moderately drink, it’s important to remember not to use alcohol as a coping strategy. It may help us fall asleep or relax our nerves, but drinking is a temporary fix. We don't want to find ourselves sneaking in a shot before every work. Also, consider the alcohol restrictions and how easily it is to have alcohol delivered without even having to leave the couch. It has become easier to have groceries delivered right to our home, as are freshly made cocktails from restaurants and bars. This newfound accessibility can be just as addictive (or dangerous) as our Amazon deliveries that start to pile up outside our house.

]]>Summertime is the season for attending family vacations, catching up with friends, and coming together for celebratory occasions. Weddings specifically are the most popular event during the summer months, with 31% of couples marrying during the season. As joyous as these events are for the couple and guests attending, those putting the dream wedding together are putting blood, sweat, and tears into creating the perfect day. Don’t get me wrong, wedding planners pride themselves on their works of art and the relationships they build with their clients. They also always ensure that everything is perfect for the big day, no matter what it takes.
What is a “Wedding Hangover”?
We all know what a hangover is, and most of us have had our fair share of first-hand experiences. (We can thank many of these hangovers for the celebrations and for going a little too hard.) However, most don’t know that event planners also experience wedding ‘hangovers’. No, wedding planners aren’t chugging straight out of the bottle behind the minibar (that we know of). They are experiencing a hangover of (mental and physical) exhaustion, dehydration, body aches and pains, and headaches. On the day of the event, vendors are running around on their feet for 12+ hours while ignoring their own bodies’ needs. Event Planner Elisa shared on her blog that during these times, vendors forget to drink water; eat enough during dinner; treat their cuts, sunburns, and sprained ankles for hours; and even use the restroom all night. While all of this may sound somewhat extreme, working in a non-stop industry where the main priority is to be attentive to your clients and their needs can make complete sense. When we love our jobs and the people we're providing services for, occasionally we can forget to be aware of our own self-care.
The Difficulty of Avoiding Hangover Symptoms
Although it is important to take care of the client and all of their needs, it is important to take care of the wedding planners and other vendors too. If they aren’t feeling 100%—especially the day of the wedding—it makes it much more difficult to give the clients the day that they deserve and can increase the chance of something going wrong. Wedding Planner Angela claims, “It’s really hard to combat the post-event hangover, it doesn’t matter how much water you drink, how many nutritious snacks you nibble on throughout the 14 hour day (or more), how many extra staff you have to assist, or the size of the event itself.” Therefore, event planners and vendors seem to get hit by the same effects that we feel when hungover from alcohol.
A Solution for All Hangovers (Drinking or Not)
Luckily, there’s a solution to keep those hungover feelings in check for the next day. DrinkLyte was originally marketed to relieve hangover symptoms for those who drink alcohol. DrinkLyte’s formula is so effective because it contains Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), which was designed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to help those suffering from chronic dehydration. Symptoms that we suffer from when dehydrated (alcohol or not) can cause headaches, thirst, fatigue, nausea, and more. Founder of Bluebell Events Charley Izabella King used Drinklyte after a wedding event, hoping to prevent the usual “wedding hangovers.” She recounted, “I took one at night and one in the morning, and I recovered so much quicker! I think it really works for our wedding hangovers!” Regardless of drinking or not, DrinkLyte is scientifically proven to rehydrate and recover the body when needed. It is just as important for event planners to rehydrate as it is for the clients enjoying the celebratory occasion.
